Enslaved people rebelled against slave owners by running away and preforming small acts of rebellion, such as decreasing their amount of work. Slaves who ran away often did it for short periods of time. They escaped to not face cruel punishments, to skip out on the rough work, or even to escape the tedious work of their daily lives. The most common way that slaves rebelled though was through small acts of rebellion such as, setting fire to buildings, breaking tools, faking illness, and decreasing their pace of work. Striking out a slave owners property was a way to strike out the owner himself.
