Stanley Milligram's experiment is based on the effect of authority in obedience. He posited that obedience is based on the proximity of the victim, the legitimacy of the authority giving the order, the ability to take responsibility by the authority in the case of any harm to the victim and capacity of the authority to punish in the case of disobedience.
He was able to identify special situational determinants of disobedience. He found out that the level of submission/obedience to authority is dependent on the situation at the time.
