Because of the so called racism (discrimination; prejudice), and the whole jury being white people there was not even a single doubt that they did not have a fair chance and would be found guilty, and yes, be treated unfairly. Even the judge on duty knew the ruling was wrong but he insisted on overruling it but he paid for it later by not being reelected.
