A client has just begun treatment with busulfan, 4 mg by mouth daily, for chronic myelogenous leukemia. The client receives busulfan until their white blood cell (WBC) count falls to between 10,000/mm3 and 25,000/mm3. Then the drug is stopped. When should treatment resume?

Answer:

The cancer causes the abnormal cells growth and inhibits the apoptosis process. Lekuemia may be define as the cancer of white blood cells and their number increases dramatically.

Busulfan is the drug used for the treatment of leukemia. This drug acts as a alkylating agent that might affects the genes involved in the cell cycle and inhibit the growth of cancerous cell. The treatment can only be resume in the condition if the patient again shows the increase in white blood cell count above 50,000/mm3.
