Why was slavery abolished in the future and not the present with the Constitution?

Slavery was not abolished in the present with the Constitution because of the high debates over the topic as well as it being the main source of income for the south.

In addition to abolishing slavery and prohibiting involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, the Thirteenth Amendment nullified the Fugitive Slave Clause and the Three-Fifths Compromise.
