Peasant farmers grew food that fed the city.

The largest class in most early civilizations was the peasant class. These people were usually concerned with agriculture, and therefore, grew the food that fed the city. This was a very important task as communities were able to grow and develop only when surplus food was available. As agriculture became more efficient and systematic, this was increasingly easier to achieve.

Sure hope this helps you :)
