The two companies charge the same for 12 tons of sugar and the cost when they charge the same is $6903.

Explanation:

  • Let 'x' be the tons of sugar transported.
  • The charge of 1st company = $4500 + $200.25x
  • The charge of 2nd comapny = $4197 + $225.50x

The two companies charge the same.

⇒ 4500 + 200.25x = 4197 + 225.50x

⇒ 4500-4197 = 225.50x - 200.25x

⇒ 303 = 25.25x

⇒ x = 303/25.25

x = 12

  • Amount of sugar = 12 tons.
  • The cost of 1st company = 4500 + 200.25(12) = $6903.
  • The cost of 2nd company = 4197 + 225.50(12) = $6903.
