Answer:

x = —1 and y = —5

Explanation:

10x + 2y = — 20. (1)

10x – 4y = 10. (2)

To solve using elimination method, do the following;

Subtract equation (1) from (2)

10x – 4y = 10. (2)

— 10x + 2y = — 20. (1)

—6y = 30

Next, divide both side by the coefficient of y i.e —6

y = 30/ —6

y = —5

Next, we substitute the value of y into any of the equation to find x. In this case I will be using equation (1)

10x + 2y = — 20.

10x + 2(—5) = — 20.

10x — 10 = —20

Collect like terms

10x = —20 + 10

10x = —10

Divide both side by the coefficient of x i.e 10

x = —10/10

x = —1

Therefore x = —1 and y = —5
