A sum of Rs 190 is divided into two parts. If the smaller part is Rs 5 less than half of the greater part,find the parts of the sum.

• Let the greater part be 'x'.
• Smaller part = (1/2)x - 5

The sum of two parts = 190

⇒ (1/2)x -5 + x = 190

⇒ 0.5x + x = 190+5

⇒ 1.5x = 195

⇒ x = 195/1.5

x = 130

∴ The greater part is 130.

Substitute x=130 to find the smaller part,

Smaller part = (1/2)(130)-5

⇒ 65-5

⇒ 60

∴ The smaller part is 60.
