A square picture with sides of 32 inches is to be mounted on a square mat with sides of 52 inches. Find the area of the mat that will remain uncovered by the picture.

Firstly since they are both areas, it will be area of the bigger square minus area of the smaller squares.

52² - 32²= (52+32)(52-32)

= (84)(20)

=1680inch².

Therefore the area of the material that will remain uncovered will be
