Red vases cost $4.20 and clear vases cost $5.70. If 25 vases cost $120 how many of each did i get?

Answer:

15 red and 10 clear

Explanation:

let r represent red vases and c represent clear vases, then

r + c = 25 → (1)

4.2r + 5.7c = 120 → (2)

Multiply (1) by - 4.2 and add to (2) to eliminate r

- 4.2r - 4.2c = - 105 → (3)

Add (2) and (3) term by term

1.5c = 15 ( divide both sides by 1.5 )

c = 10

Substitute c = 10 into either of the 2 equations and solve for r

Substituting c = 10 in (1)

r + 10 = 25 ( subtract 10 from both sides )

r = 15

Thus 15 red vases and 10 clear vases were bought.
