Ajar contains 12 caramels, 7 mints and 16

dark chocolates. What is the probability of
selecting a mint expressed as a fraction?

Answer: 1/5

Explanation: To find the probability of selecting a mint out of the jar, we use our ratio for the probability of an event which is shown below.

(P) event = number of favorable outcomes/total number of outcomes.

Since there are 7 mints in the jar, the number of favorable outcomes is 4 and since there are 35 candies in all,

the total number of outcomes is 35.

Therefore, the probability of selecting a mint is 7/35.

Notice however that 7/35 is not in lowest terms so we need to divide the numerator and denominator of 7/35 by their greatest common factor of 7 to get 1/5.

So our final answer for the probability of selecting a mint is 1/5.
