(5) Everyman puts on the garment of contrition

Step-by-step explanation:

To understand and to be able to provide the correct order, we must look at the play and what it seeks to represent. Everyman is a mortality play and is in fact, one of the best mortality plays in medieval times. The original play was actually written and performed in the Dutch language in the mid 15th century. One of the things different about this play compared to those written by other playwrights is that the play does not use fictional characters. It rather uses characters that are allusions to real life concept such as "Everyman" himself, "Good Deeds" as a lady, "Knowledge" as Good Deed's sister and so on and so forth. The play focuses on Everyman's trial in front of God when he is visited by Death to answer for his actions during his time on earth. Now, that we have an idea of what the play is, we can look at the sequence of events in order.

Everyman has been summoned to give account of his sins. He turns to Good Deeds for her support in getting him acquitted. however, since he had not spent much time committing acts of good during his lifetime, Good Deeds is very weak and cannot walk. This is where "Good Deed"'s sister, Knowledge steps in and tells Everyman she will be his guide. Together with Knowledge, Everyman decided to go find "Confession" in the House of Salvation. Confession tells Everyman that he can be atoned through the act of penance. At this point Everyman kneels down and prays for mercy and forgiveness from God. Having done this, Confession give Everyman a scourge. As Everyman continues to scourge himself to achieve forgiveness, Good Deeds is suddenly able to get up and walk again. After the scourge, Knowledge proceeds to give Everyman the garment of contrition which he is able to don and go along.
