x ---> the number of small drinks sold

y ---> the number of medium drinks sold

we know that

The stand sold 72 drinks

so


x+y=72 ----> equation A

The ratio of small drinks to medium drinks sold was 5:3


(x)/(y)=(5)/(3)


x=(5)/(3)y ----> equation B

substitute equation B in equation A


(5)/(3)y+y=72


(8)/(3)y=72\\\\y=72(3)/8\\\\y=27

Find the value of x


x=(5)/(3)(27)=45

Find out the total amount of money received at the lemonade stand


0.50(45)+1.00(27)=\$49.50
