Area of the shaded region = 24 m²

Area of the polygon = 160 ft²

Solution:

Question 1:

Length of the rectangle = 8 m

Width of the rectangle = 4 m

Area of the rectangle = length × width

= 8 × 4

= 32 m²

Area of the rectangle = 32 m²

Side length of the square = 2 m

Area of the square = side × side

= 2 × 2

= 4 m²

Area of the square = 4 m²

Area of 2 squares = 2 × 4 = 8 m²

Area of the shaded region = Area of the rectangle – Area of 2 squares

= 32 m² – 8 m²

= 24 m²

Area of the shaded region = 24 m²

Question 2:

Area of the rectangle = 14 × 12 = 168 ft²

Area of the one square (corner) = 2 × 2 = 4 ft²

Area of the 2 squares (corner) = 2 × 4 = 8 ft²

Area of the polygon = Area of the rectangle – Area of 2 squares

= 168 ft² – 8 ft²

= 160 ft²

Area of the polygon = 160 ft²
