Let’s consider how we are part of a consumer culture. Think about a consumer good you recently acquired and care about, for example, an item of clothing.

Does this item in any way help establish or demonstrate who you are, what you are about, and how you perceive yourself?
How so?

Answer: I have a T-shirt with an image of The shining (1980s cult horror film). It´s the one item of clothing that makes me feel cool. In addition to being an informal piece of clothing, this item allows me to show one of my favorite movies, and also helps me create the self-identity that I like to portrait: a person who´s versed in cinema history, who is also approachable and easy-going.

Step-by-step explanation:

Consumer culture is profoundly related to people's sense of identity and worth because the goods we purchase not only have a specific utility but also perform symbolic roles for us as consumers. The possessions we choose are meant to socially signal and demonstrate certain personality features, to create self-identities. Those goods tend to be perceived as extensions of the self.
