The larger of two numbers is 15 more than three times the smaller number. If the sum of the two numbers is 63, find the numbers

The smaller number equals 12, the larger number equals 51.

Explanation:

x + (3x + 15) = 63

Combine like terms.

4x + 15 = 63

Subtract 15 from both sides.

4x + (15 -15) = (63 - 15)

4x = 48

Divide both sides by 4.

4x/4 = 48/4

x = 12

Check answer.

12 + (3(12) + 15) = 63

12 + 36 + 15 = 63

63 = 63
