The mood in the poem "The Listeners" is eerie and morbidly fascinating. This mood of morbidity is developed by the use of staple Gothic imagery of full moon and a gloomy forest along with the ominous refrain of ‘Is there anybody there?’. These images create a harrowing effect of fascination while still inducing a horror of the unknown in the poem as it develops around a mysterious traveler and supernatural elements as in 'But only a host of phantom listeners' and in the lines 'Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house, From the one man left awake'
