Question:

A grocery store sells different brands of dry roasted almonds. One brand costs $6.99 for 270 g. Another brand costs $7.55 for 285 g. Which costs the least for the 100 g?

Answer:

The brand which costs $6.99 for 270 g is the least for 100 g.

Solution:

Cost of first brand for 270 g = $6.99

Cost of first brand for 1 g =
(6.99)/(270)=\$0.0259

Cost of first brand for 100 g = $0.0259 × 100 = $2.59

Cost of second brand for 285 g = $7.55

Cost of second brand for 1 g =
(7.55)/(285)=\$0.0264

Cost of second brand for 100 g = $0.0264 × 100 = $2.64

Since $2.59 < $2.64

The brand which costs $6.99 for 270 g is the least for 100 g.
