In any chemical reaction, the total mass of the products formed is equal to the total mass of reactants of the reaction because law of conservation of mass states that matter can neither be created nor be destroyed during a chemical reaction. In writing chemical equations, the correct chemical formula or symbols of the reactants are written on the left hand side while those of the products are written on the right hand side.

For example, Ca + 2 H2O --> Ca (OH)2 + H2. In this reaction, Ca and 2H2O are reactants while Ca(OH)2 and H2 are products.
