Why might a doctor ask you about your family‘s medical history

A doctor might ask you this information, because it puts you at a higher risk for certain things if previous family members also had those than you would be if none of your family members had it.

For example, my papal passed away this summer but he had cancer and heart issues. So as I get older, or at any given time really I am at a higher risk for these things because my grandpa had them, than I would be had he not had those issues.
