The following are the environmental obstacles encountered by settlers trying to farm the prairie during the second half of the nineteenth century:
The
cutting of grass
over large pieces of land was not possible easily as there was no advanced mechanism available.
The
winds
that blew over the large Prairies were an obstacle in the cultivation of crops.
The Prairies were very much prone to
soil erosion
.
Irrigating
the large fields was difficult as the water had to be lifted from distant sources of water.
