It was divided in four occupation zones. The Soviet zone included Berlin, also occupied by all the victorious powers. In 1948, the US gave economic aid to Germany and there were plans to introduce a single currency in the Western zones. Alarmed by these plans, the Soviet government imposed a blockade of the Western occupation areas in Berlin, trying to limit Western access to the city.
