Explanation:

5x-2y=1

2x+y=4

Im gonna use substitution but you could also use elimination

2x+y=4

-2x -2x

y=-2x+4

replace y in the first equation with the second equation

5x-2(-2x+4)=1

distribute -2

5x+4x-8=1

add

9x-8=1

+8 +8

9x=9

divide both sides by 9

x=1

then put x in for the equation fo your choice im gonna use the second one

2(1)+y=4

2+y=4

-2 -2

y=1
