According to the The Triangle Inequality Theorem, the sum of any two sides of a triangle must be greater then the measure of the third side. So use this theorem to solve:

6+12=18 and 18>5

so far it is following the theorem but we need to make sure all of the sides follow it so lets continue.

6+5= 11 and 11<12

This does not follow the theorem, so the sides 5,6, and 12 cannot form a triangle.
