Walt received a package that is 2 1/3 inches long, 6 ¾ inches high, and 8 ½ inches wide. What is the surface area of the package?

Solution:

Given that,


Length = 2(1)/(3)\ inches = (3 * 2 + 1)/(3) = (7)/(3)\ inches = 2.33\ inches


Width = 8(1)/(2)\ inches = (17)/(2)\ inches = 8.5\ inches


Height = 6(3)/(4)\ inches = (27)/(4)\ inches = 6.75\ inches

The surface area of package is given as:


A=2(wl+hl+hw)

Where,

"l" is the length

"w" is the width

"h" is the height

Substituting the values we get,


A = 2((8.5 * 2.33) + (6.75 * 2.33) + (6.75 * 8.5))\\\\Simplify\ the\ above\ equation\\\\A = 2(19.805+15.7275+57.375)\\\\A = 2 * 92.9075\\\\A = 185.815

Thus the surface area of prism is 185.815 square inches
