C(i). A body weighs 600g in air and 400g in water. Calculate;

i. Up thrust of the body
ii. Volume of the body
iii. Relative density of the solid
iv. Density of the solid

Answer:

B buoyant force (mass) = 600 - 400 = 200 g (I)

upthrust is 200 g due to decrease in apparent body weight

(Note that g is being treated as force here when it is actually mass)

D = M / V definition of density

since density of water is 1 (1 g / cm^3)

from (I) the equivalent volume of water is 200 cm^3 since the upthrust will equal the weight of the water displaced

Relative density of solid is 600 g / 200 g = 3 (weight of solid vs the weight of the water displaced

D = 3 g / cm^3 density of solit
