Viruses are the smallest abiotic infectious agents, abiotic which means non-living. The reason why viruses are considered nonliving is that they are not able to reproduce or produce energy by themself, they have to live in a host's cell. They contain genetic DNA or RNA, and when a virus enters a host's cell it takes over the host's functions. The virus causes the cell to produce viral proteins and viral genetic material... many viruses can remain inactive for certain periods of time causing no obvious change. And when the inactive virus is eventually stimulated it causes new viruses to be created in the cell. The new viruses will soon come out of the host and spread to other cells in the body.
