Why is the unit in volume measured with units cubed instead of units squared?

Explanation:

Cubed is 3 dimensions: length, width, and height - like measuring how much water will fit in a cup. Squared is only 2 dimensions - like when you measure a piece of paper or a floor tile or a piece of fabric.
