Explanation:

Let the L be the larger number and S the smaller number

the sum of two numbers is 40 can be represented as:

L + S = 40-----------------(1)

From (1), make S subject of formula:

S = 40 - L------------------(2)

express the product of the two numbers in terms of L

product of the two numbers = L*S

Substituting S = 40 - L from (2)

L*S = L (40-L)

= 40L - L²
