x - y = 4

Explanation:


x - 1 = 0

Add 1 to both sides of the equation , that is


x - 1 + 1 = 0 + 1


x = 1

Also


y + 3 = 0

subtract 3 from both sides of the equation , that is


y + 3 - 3 = 0 - 3


y = -3

Therefore :


x - y = 1 - (-3)


x - y = 1 + 3


x - y = 4
