Question:

Anthony is riding in a race.The equation d=40-1/5m, where d= distance in miles and m= minutes,can be used to estimate the number of miles anthony has left before reaching the finish line.how many miles does anthony have to finish the race if he has been riding for one hour and twenty minutes?

Answer:

Antony has to ride for 24 miles

Solution:

Given that,

The equation used to estimate the number of miles is:

d = 40-(1)/(5)m

Where, "m" is the minutes and "d" is the distance

Given that Antony is riding for 1 hour 20 minutes

We know that,

1 hour = 60 minutes

1 hour 20 minutes = 60 minutes + 20 minutes = 80 minutes

Substitute m = 80 in given eqn

d = 40 - (1)/(5) * 80\\\\d = 40 - 16\\\\d = 24

Thus Antony has to ride for 24 miles
