How do you subtract 1/4 and 3/8

Multiply 3 by 4, and get 12.

Next, multiply 1 by 8, and get 8,

then multiply 8 times 4 and get 32, which is now the denominator.

Your fractions will be 12/32 and 8/32 subtract those numbers and you get 4/32.
