United states was successful in acquiring a large share of lands which were more than fifty thousand square miles from France and it was popularly called Louisiana Purchase. Much of the lands which were located in the west of North america were left to be unexplored and hence Lewis and Clark were ordered to take up an expedition and they were popularly called to be the corps of discovery.
With a band of forty men, the corps reached Mississippi and the happened to confront many native american tribes called Tentons, Sioux and Mandans. Their confrontations with the native Americans were largely rerecorded to be peaceful and also during the expedition.
They found more than hundred plant and animal species to be new and studied the geographical aspects if the great plains. Prairie dogs and grizzly bears were found to be new to the explorers.
Captain Meriwether Lewis was the secretary of Thomas Jefferson and Clark was the Army officer who trained the corps to take up the expedition in a safe manner. They happen to meet many tribal people who helped them in knowing about their culture and providing food and shelter.
Within six months the expedition was completed and a whole report was sent to Thomas Jefferson. After the expedition, Lewis was made to be the governor of Louisiana territory and after his death, Clark was made governor of the Missouri territory.
