In a bag of blue and red marbles i have the following ratio of blue total marbles; 3:5

If i have 60 blue marbles in the bag how many of these marbles are red Use a proportion with labels to solve

The number of red marbles in the bag = 40

Explanation:

Here, given: The number of blue marbles in the bag = 60

Let us assume , The number of red marbles in the bag = m

So, the total marbles = Red + Blue = 60 + m

Also given ratio of blue marbles : total marbles = 3 : 5

3:5 = 60 : 60+ m

By the RATIO OF PROPORTION:


(3)/(5) = (60)/(60 + m) \\\implies 3(60 +m) = 5 * 60\\\implies 180 + 3m = 300\\\implies 3 m = 300 - 180 = 120\\m = (120)/(3) = 40\\\implies m = 40

Hence the number of red marbles in the bag = 40
