y > |x| + 5 [y is greater than the absolute value of x plus 5]

Absolute value or the bars | | means that any number inside will always be positive, even if whatever was inside was negative

For example:

| -7 | = 7

To see if the points are a solution to the inequality, plug it in

A. (1, 7)

y > |x| + 5

7 > |1| + 5

7 > 1 + 5

7 > 6 This is a solution because 7 is greater than 6

B. (0, 5)

5 > |0| + 5

5 > 5 This is not a solution because 5 can't be greater than itself, and the sign would have to be ≥ (greater than or equal to" for it to be true

C. (7, 1)

1 > |7| + 5

1 > 7 + 5

1 > 12 This is not a solution because 1 is not greater than 12
