The dissociative identity disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder, is characterized by alternating between 2 or more identities that can take complete control of a person's behavior, with distinct names, genders, ages and even thoughts and emotions.

It´s the most controversial of disorders because it can be faked and has been discredited. The sociocognitive model claims that is a socially constructed disorder that emanates from the therapist forcing ideas upon someone, in addition to media representation, and cultural expectations.

On the other hand, researchers who hold DID is a valid disorder find distinct brain & bodily changes linked to different identities, and both the psychodynamic & the learning perspectives agree that it may be a way to deal with anxiety
