Yoko's Coffee Shop makes a blend that is a mixture of two types of coffee. Type A coffee costs Yoko $4.25 per pound, and type B coffee costs $5.90 per pound. This month, Yoko made 133 pounds of the blend, for a total cost of $584.20. How many pounds of type B coffee did she use?

Explanation:

First we developed 2 equations with the information they gave us

4.25 * X + 5.90 * Y = 584.20

X + Y = 133

Now we clear one of the unknowns with respect to the other and replace it in the other equation.

X = 133 - Y

4.25 (133 - Y) + 5.90 * Y = 584.20

here we have enough information to solve and remove the unknowns

565.25 - 4.25Y + 5.90Y = 584.20

- 4.25Y + 5.90Y = 584.20 - 565.25

1.64Y = 18.95

Y = 18.95/1.64

Y = 11.55

X = 133 - 11.55

X = 121.45
