Step-by-step explanation:
In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech two stories are being told at the same time. Sal and Phoebe’s stories are the stories behind this book. When Sal begins to tell Phoebe’s story it unveils the secrets behind the life of Sal. Both stories are about how mothers deal with children that they've lost: in different ways, and with different endings.
To start, Phoebe’s story is about Sal's best friend in Euclid, Ohio. Phoebe, who lives next door to Margaret Cadaver, is a high-strung girl obsessed with propriety and order. Phoebe lives within a sort of manufactured drama, in which she transforms every small insignificant event into a menacing portent. Sal’s story is about Sal's grief over the loss of her mother. With the help of her grandparents, she journeys across the country to follow in her mother's final footsteps. In both of these stories, Sal and Phoebe were both little girls who had their mothers leave, and could not understand. They were both desperate to find answers and acted out when they could not find how to express their feelings. In “Walk Two Moons” it indicates “When my father said that my mother was not coming back, I refused to believe it. I bought all her postcards from my room and said “ She wrote me all these, she must be coming back.” And just like Phoebe, who had waved her mother’s sweater in front of her father, I had brought a chicken from the coop.” This suggests that Phoebe and Sal don’t know and talk things out with others. They both refused to believe that their mothers weren’t coming back, and didn’t know how to share their feelings with others. Therefore, Sal and Phoebe threw tantrums because they couldn’t say what they were feeling. Which resulted in Sal and Phoebe becoming desperate for answers.
Although these stories might be similar, Phoebe and Sal’s stories were different as well. There is an important difference, however. Phoebe’s mother finally returns. Sal ends up losing her mom in the end, resulting in her mom not returning. Sal even explains that Phoebe’s mom returning is one of the things she is jealous of. In the story, Sal says “The last jealousy is not foolish, nor is it one that will go away just yet. I am still jealous that Phoebe’s mother came back and mine did not.” Sal saying this shows that she is upset that her mother didn’t come back like she said she would. The difference is that the outcome of Phoebe’s story is that she got a new brother and her mother came back with a new look. However, the outcome of Sal’s story was a bit sad, she lost her Grandma and moved back to Bybanks and most of all her mother never came back.
Furthermore, these stories complement each other well. In my opinion, I believe that Walk Two Moons is an appropriate title for this story because it shows how someone walks in someone’s shoes for two months. Usually, we have one full moon every month, and so if we were going to walk for two moons, that probably means we'll be walking for two months. The fact that "moons" show up in this title hints at the fact that nature is going to be a big part of this story. Walk Two Moons is an honest story about how difficult and confusing life can be as we grow up. It teaches us about life lessons that you can't always learn in school, like lessons about loss and self-identity. One of the biggest lessons Sal learns is to walk in someone else's shoes, or, moccasins. By the end of the novel, Sal has learned to walk in the moccasins of her greatest enemy, Mrs. Cadaver.
To conclude, in Walk two moon two stories are told. When Sal tells the story of Phoebe it reveals what’s up ahead for her. They both lost their mothers, wanted answers, and faced the truth. In the end, Sal didn’t get her mother, but she made peace with it. These stories had their ups and downs, but they both made peace with their pasts. Overall, the title of this story complements the theme of this story. Sal and Phoebe both learned to never judge someone until they walked in their shoes.
