Answer:

length of the square is 4

Explanation:

Step:-1

Let 'k' be a positive integer

Given data the square of a positive integer is decreased by the number the result is 12

square of a positive integer is k^2 and decrease by k and the result is 12

That is
k^(2) -k =12

k^(2) -k -12 =0........(1)

Step :2

find the factors of equation (1)

k^(2) -4 k+3 k -12=0

k(k-4)+3(k-4)=0

(k-4)(k+3) = 0

k=4 and k=-3

here we can not take negative integer

we can choose k=4 only

so length of the square l is =4

verification:-

substitute k = 4 in equation (1)

4^(2)-4 = 12

12 =12

Final answer :-

The length of square is l = 4
