A car with a mass of 950 kg moves at 24 m/s. What braking force is needed to bring the car to a halt in 10 s?

a = (v-u)/t.............................. Equation 2

Where u = initial velocity of the car, v = final velocity of the car, t = time.

Given: u = 24 m/s, v = 0 m/s ( as the car comes to halt), t = 10 s.

Substitute into equation 2.

a = (0-24)/10

a = -24/10

a = -2.4 m/s²

Also given: m = 950 kg

Substitute into equation 1

F = 950(-2.4)

F = -2280 N

Hence the braking force needed to bring the car to an halt = -2280 N
