Shannon is making three different sizes of blankets from the same material. The first measures 2.5 feet by 2 feet. She wants to enlarge it by scale factor of 2 to make the second blanket. Then she will enlarge the second one by a scale factor of 1.5 to make the third blanket. What are the dimensions of the third blanket? Are any of the blankets similar?

Answer:

The dimensions of the third blanket are 7.5 feet by 6 feet.

All the blankets are similar.

Explanation:

The size of the first blanket is 2.5 feet by 2 feet.

Shannon wants to enlarge the first blanket by scale factor 2 to make the second blanket.

Hence, the size of the second blanket will be
(2.5*2) = 5 feet by
2*2 = 4 feet.

Again she enlarged the second blanket by a scale factor 1.5 to make the third blanket.

Hence, the size of the second blanket will be
5*1.5 = 7.5 feet by
4*1.5 = 6 feet.

Enlargement only changes the size of the blanket, it does not change the shape of the blanket. Hence, all the blankets will be similar.
