This portion is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye and controls, among other things, our ability to see fine details of an object. For that, people with the disease loses their central vision. It, normally, happens as you age, that's why is called Age-related macular degeneration, but it can affect children and young adults in another form called Stargardt.
