Answer: He spent somewhere around a couple of years at least on the island with Calypso but his exact time spent is unsure. Calypso is a nymph on an island full of only women and Odysseus is a novelty there and Calypso will not let him leave because of this. If Odysseus stays Calypso has promised him immortality to live with her on the island but Odysseus realizes he is truly in love with his wife and refuses but is still not allowed to leave until Athena her goes to her father, Zeus, to ask him to intervene so Odysseus can return home. Zeus then sends Hermes to tell Calypso to set Odysseus free in which she allows him to build a raft to get off the island. All of that rounds up to about two or so years.
