When you look for (f+g)(x), we are in essence say that we're looking for f(x)+g(x)

=(2x+1)+(x^2-7). (substitute for f(x) and g(x))

=2x+1+x^2-7. (remove the brackets by substituting positive 1 into g(x))

=2x+x^2-6 (add like terms- in this case 1-7=6)

=x^2+2x-6 (rearrange the equation)
