Question:

An airplane is flying from new york city to los angeles, the distance it travels in miles, d, is related to the time in seconds , t, by the equation d=0.15t

A.How fast is it flying? Be sure to include the units. B. How far will it travels and 30 seconds? C. How long will it take to go 12.75 miles?

Answer:

A) The plane is travelling at rate of 0.15 miles per second

B) The plane will travel 4.5 miles in 30 seconds

C) The plane will take 85 seconds to travel 12.75 miles

Solution:

Given that,

The distance it travels in miles, d, related to the time in seconds , t, is given by equation:

d = 0.15t --------- eqn 1

A) Substitute t = 1 to find the speed of plane in miles per second

d = 0.15 * 1 = 0.15

distance = 0.15 miles

speed = (distance)/(time)

speed = (0.15)/(1) = 0.15

Therefore, plane is travelling at rate of 0.15 miles per second

B) How far will it travels and 30 seconds?

Substitute t = 30 in eqn 1

d = 0.15 * 30\\\\d = 4.5

Therefore, plane will travel 4.5 miles in 30 seconds.

C) How long will it take to go 12.75 miles?

Substitute d = 12.75 miles in eqn 1

12.75 = 0.15 * t\\\\t = (12.75)/(0.15)\\\\t = 85

Therefore, plane will take 85 seconds to travel 12.75 miles
