If 5x - 3y = 1 and x = 2y - 4, then x • y = ?

I don’t need an explanation of the answer since it’s multiple choice, but feel free to give an explanation if you want :) thank you and please answer quickly this is due tomorrow!!

Answer:

x = 2, y = 3

Explanation:

i) It is given that 5x - 3y =1

ii) It is also given that x = 2y - 4

iii) we can substitute the value of x from ii) in the equation in i) and we will get 5(2y - 4) - 3y = 1 ⇒ 10y - 20 -3y = 1 ⇒ 7y = 21 ∴ y = 3

iv) substituting the value of y obtained in ii) we get x = (2 × 3) - 4 = 6 - 4 = 2.

v) Therefore x = 2.
