A telephone pole casts a shadow of 82 feet, and a 10 foot pole casts a shadow of 14 feet. Estimate the height (in ft) of the telephone pole.

The height of telephone pole is 58.57 feet

Solution:

Given that, A telephone pole casts a shadow of 82 feet, and a 10 foot pole casts a shadow of 14 feet

To find: height of telephone pole

From given information,

Height of telephone pole = ?

Shadow of telephone pole = 82 feet

Height of pole = 10 feet

Shadow of pole = 14 feet

The telephone pole and its shadow and another pole and its shadow forms proportion

Therefore, we can say by proportion,


\frac{\text{Height of telephone pole}}{\text{Shadow of telephone pole}} = \frac{\text{Height of pole}}{\text{Shadow of pole }}

Substituting the values we get,


\frac{\text{Height of telephone pole}}{82} = (10)/(14)\\\\\text{Height of telephone pole} = (10)/(14) * 82\\\\\text{Height of telephone pole} = 58.57

Thus height of telephone pole is 58.57 feet
