substitute y
6x + 5(2x – 14) = -6

use distributive property
6x + 10x – 70 = -6

add terms together
16x = 64

isolate x
16x/16 = 64/16

x = 4

to find value of y, use your x value in the second equation

y = 2(4) – 14

y = -6

Verify you are correct
6(4) + 5(-6) = -6
