To do this you need to know that the number (or variable) on the outside of the parenthesis must be multiplied to all of the numbers/variables on the inside of the parenthesis.

So here, you want to multiply x by 4:

Then multiply y by 4:

And because the expression is adding the x and y, it comes out as:
